The only surprise here is the magnitude of California's dominance of the "Billion-Dollar Club" - about 70% of the Billion-Dollar Club members are located in California.

The companies located outside of California are:

• Activio (Waltham, MA)
• MongoDB, Mobli, ZocDoc, Gilt Groupe, Fab.com (New York)

50% of the California "Billion-Dollar Club" are located in San Francisco.

All of the San Francisco companies are - not surprisingly - internet and software startups. Looks like that San Francisco and Marin County real estate boom isn't ending anytime soon.
